The javelin decided it. Pierce LePage (CAN) had led since the discus and stood 7337 with 81 on Zach Ziemek (USA), Mayer third on 7251 and 86 back. Mayer threw 70.31 for 894 points, LePage 57.52 for 701, and the standing turned over to 8145 and a lead of 107. The 1500m held it at 115.
Mayer was sixth at the day break on 4372 and 191 under his own PB series, having lost 65 in the long jump at 7.54 against a 7.80 series mark, 63 in the shot and 47 in the 400m. Day 2 never returned any of it, and the deficit widened event by event, to 213 after the hurdles, 236 after the discus and 252 after 5.40 in the pole vault for 1035 points. He still moved from sixth to first over those five events, because his day 2 total of 4444 was the highest in the field. He finished 310 under the series.
LePage was second at the break on 4485 and 44 under his PB series, with 10.39 in the 100m for 1001 points and 46.84 over 400m for 966. Day 2 reversed it in two events: 13.78 in the hurdles for 1003 points, 78 above his series mark, then 53.26 in the discus for 939, 128 above it, which took him to 162 up and into the lead. The javelin and the 1500m gave 65 back and he finished 8701, 97 above his series and a personal best on the 8604 he scored in Tokyo in August 2021.
Ziemek was third at the break on 4469 and 65 above his own PB series, gained in small amounts across four of the five events. The discus cost him 68, the largest single loss on his sheet, and the pole vault returned 78 at 5.40 against a 5.15 series mark. He finished 8676, 103 above the series and a personal best on the 8573 he scored in Fayetteville in May 2022, 25 behind LePage.
Ayden Owens-Delerme (PUR) took fourth, 144 behind Ziemek. He had led after the 400m and the hurdles, first at the day break on 4606 and 123 above his PB series, built on 2.02 in the high jump for 91 above the series mark and 45.07 over 400m for 1056 points. The pole vault opened the gap: 4.50 for 760 points against Ziemek's 1035 turned an 88-point lead into 187 behind. The javelin took another 168 and 4.13.02 in the 1500m for 860 points closed 211 of it, leaving him 144 short and 4 above his own series.
Damian Warner (CAN) came in with the second-best PB in the field, 9018 from Tokyo in August 2021, and led the first four events. He stood 3696 after the high jump, then recorded no valid mark in the 400m, which dropped him to twenty-first and 1026 under his own PB series, and did not start the hurdles.
Four men in the field finished above their PB series, and each of those is a personal best. Ziemek's 103 and LePage's 97 were the largest, both made on day 2. Ken Mullings (BAH) gained 132 for seventeenth and Owens-Delerme 4. Kyle Garland (USA), the third-ranked entrant on 8720 from Fayetteville in May 2022, finished eleventh and 587 under his series, and Kai Kazmirek (GER) twelfth and 467 under.
